When the spirit moves me, I may also include longer essays. Wednesday, August 15, 2007 A Tale of Copying Woe Since this site isn't interactive yet, I'll talk about a tale of woe that involved Willamette Writers leasing a high speed copier to do its newsletter (mailed to 1,500 people). The idea was to put a cap on rising printing costs (12 page newsletter was running about $940 a month to print, with unpredictable delivery dates). Copying a two page color, 10 page black and white newsletter at 10 cents per page color, 1 cent per page black and white, penciled out. Not really a saving in printing Read More

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Some Common Mistakes And How to Avoid Them by Melisa Michaels The Apostrophe Phrase Matching Spelling Identifying Your Pronouns Being Consistent The Apostrophe: When In Doubt, Leave It Out The omitted apostrophe confuses meaning less often than the needless one does. If I write a note to tell you, "This is Janes dog," you'll likely know I mean to let you know the dog belongs to Jane. If I write instead, "Jane's friend's are writer's," and you know anything about the punctuation of English, you will be in some confusion as to what belongs to whom. In general, the apostrophe means one of two things. There is a missing letter where it is. For example, in "don't" there is a missing "o"; in "it's" there is a missing "i": each of these is a one-word contraction commonly used to represent two wor Read More

(It may sound strange, but it's actually quite fascinating.) Every week we work on the one major piece each student has and then do a creative writing exercise. My source of good exercises is running low. I would be happy to share some of my own, but also wondered if others might share exercise formats which work well for groups of 12-15 people. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you. ENDINGS by Lori Handeland

Endings by Lori Handeland How do you create the perfect ending? How do you find a way to put the finish on months of work? How do you produce an ending to your masterpiece that will make your story linger in the minds of your readers' long after they close the book? It's not easy. But nothing worthwhile ever is. Sometimes you find your way through trial and error. Sometimes you find it immediately. And sometimes the perfect finish comes to you out of the blue when you're not even looking for it. Now that we've learned how to start a book and how to get through the middle, it's time to search out our ending. First and foremost, an ending must deliver on the promise inherent in the rest of the book. In a romance this means-- A HAPPY ENDING! I can't stress that enough. I've judged several tim Read More

Estimating Word Count

Votes:0
Estimating Word Count: When you query a publisher, it's customary to include your novel's estimated word count. Assuming you use the standard conventions for manuscript format (1" margins, 25 double-spaced lines per page, and a 12 point non-proportional font like Courier), then a good rule of thumb is one page equals 250 words. For the math-impaired, that means you multiply the number of manuscript pages times 250 to get your word count. To make it even easier, here's a chart: 200 pages = 50,000 words 360 pages = 90,000 240 pages = 60,000 400 pages = 100,000 280 pages = 70,000 440 pages = 110,000 320 pages = 80,000 480 pages = 120,00 Now, I know your word processor will give you the exact word count, but that's not what the publisher is looking for. According to my computer, my second Read More

I have tended to avoid cover letters that boil down to "Hi, here's the manuscript, hope you like it," but am at a loss for what to substitute. A: A sample cover letter, from a published author: Dear [editor], Herewith my story [title] for consideration in your anthology. I've enclosed only a letter-sized envelope for return; you may dispose of the manuscript itself. Best wishes, The purpose of this letter is to explain to the editor that you are submitting the story. How to publish yourself

Votes:0
How to publish yourself (in the UK) Why? The book that is supposedly inside all of us is trying to get out? You've written your memoirs and no-one will publish them? You've written a local history book, or something with a small circulation and readership, and no-one is interested in publishing it? You answered one of those adverts that offers to publish your book, but they want too much money? Yep, it's all typical. For many people the need to be published or to have a tangible printed result outweighs any considerations of profit and glory. This is just as well, because publishing yourself is not the path to instant riches. The best that you can hope for is small sales, a warm glow and the feeling that you climbed Everest without oxygen, carrying the Sherpas. The reason that the 'real' p Read More

LEO Gender-free Writing

LEO: Literacy Education Online Avoiding Gender Bias in Pronouns "Biased language can cause your reader to focus on how you say something rather than what you say. If your language is free of bias, it should offend no one; ideally, no one should even notice that you have made an effort to reduce sexually biased words and phrases." [ 1 ] Achieving unbiased language so that readers will concentrate on what you have to say rather than how you say it is an admirable goal. It's also, I might add, a necessity. For example, businesses and individuals have been sued because job descriptions used "he" and seemed to exclude women -- whether or not the exclusion was intended. Therefore, gender free language is a requirement of the workplace and the university. It may be easy to avoid gender-biased nou Read More

A novel is a sudden window opened to let us watch an arc of action from its initial to its closing phase. If you open the window too early, your readers have to drum their mental fingers waiting for the action to start. Open the window too late, and you'll find yourself desperately filling in with flashbacks and infodumps. How do you know what action is the initial action? What is your story about? The Written Word: Writing Tips

Writing Tips A lot more than character names and a heck of an idea go into the writing of a book. If I'd had any idea how much work it was when I started writing twenty years ago, I would have thrown the typewriter out the window before I got so deeply into this. I have broken it down into eight different catagories (in order of priority): Plot, Location, Characters, Research, Dialogue, Description, Putting It All Together, and Those (Not So) Minor Details. You may or may not agree this is how it should be done, or you may not agree with the order of importance, but this is the way I do it and it works for me and as my dad always says, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I don't pretend to know everything about writing---far from it, actually!---but I will share with you what I do know. Plo Read More

Tips, Tools & Ideas to Improve Your Writing Dear Visitor: ACI's "Tips, Tools & Ideas to Improve Your Writing" was first introduced as free content some nine years ago, in the Spring of 1996.
