Animal and Zoonotic Disease Surveillance

ILIAD-Tanzania Agro-terrorism ProMED Search Project Infectious Animal and Zoonotic Disease Surveillance Mission Diseases of terrestrial, avian and aquatic life influence a number of global security issues -- food for an increasing world population, access to international trade, species conservation and protection of those endangered, and economic growth in developing and re-organizing nations. Because many animal disease agents are zoonotic (transmissible between humans and animals, causing infection in both species), their management and prevention are crucial to improving public health on a global scale. Moreover, animal diseases raise arms control concerns through the potential use of animal pathogens in bio-terrorism and economic espionage. The Role of Disease Surveillance in the Watc Read More

Animal Health Care - An Overview

-Advertisement- Animal Health Care - An Overview BIO "Animals, People, and Biotechnology." Washington, D.C.: Biotechnology Industry Organization, 1992. New Health Products for Farm Animals Animal diseases cost U.S. agriculture $17 billion each year, according to the Congress Office of Technology Assessment. To help prevent these losses, animal scientists are using biotechnology to develop an array of products to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease in farm animals. An area where animal biotechnology has already had a profound impact is diagnostic testing. Many animal diseases are difficult to diagnose. A veterinarian often has to wait hours or days for laboratory results to confirm a diagnosis. In the meantime, the veterinarian must either withhold treatment or risk using an inappropriate Read More

It has been estimated that the incidence of ovarian cysts ranges from 5 to 20 percent in most herds. A recent Wisconsin field study of dairy herds reported that the incidence of ovarian cysts ranged from a low of 16.2 to a high of 47.4 percent. Mature cows have a higher incidence (39 percent) of ovarian cysts than do first-calf heifers (11 percent). Breeding age heifers have a lower incidence of ovarian cysts (3-6 percent). Coccidiosis

Votes:0
Coccidiosis, A Troubling Animal Disease Coccidiosis is an intestinal disease that affects several different animal species. The causative agent is a protozoan that has the ability to multiply rapidly. Coccidia are very host specific, that is, only cattle coccidia will cause disease in cattle, other species-specific coccidia will not cause disease. The major damage is due to the rapid multiplication of the parasite in the intestinal wall, and the subsequent rupture of the cells of the intestinal lining. Several stages of multiplication occur before the final stage, the oocyst, is passed in the feces. Oocysts are extremely resistant to environmental stress and are difficult to completely remove from the environment. Oocysts are frequent contaminants of feed and water and when the sporulated Read More

Fanconi Disease Management Protocol for Veterinarians

Fanconi Disease Management Protocol for Veterinarians by Steven Gonto , MMSc, PhD, Medical Sciences Revised March 1999 Definition: Fanconi Disease is a mammalian renal tubular reabsorption failure, usually genetic in origin, resulting in polyuria/polydipsia (PU/PD) with glucosuria; generalized aminoaciduria; proteinuria; loss of multiple vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and bicarbonate . These losses result in metabolic acidosis, protein-loss muscle wasting, weight loss, and myalgia. Left uncorrected, it causes increasing acidosis, while stressing the respiratory compensation system to its maximum effort, and leads to the progressive and degenerative renal and then multisystem failure, resulting in death. With early intervention and lifelong management, prognosis appears excellent for long Read More

FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS, 1995 Alice M. Wolf, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM INTRODUCTION Feline coronavirus disease is a subject of considerable controversy and confusion. Cats are susceptible to infection with several members of the coronavirus group including porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), canine coronavirus (CCV), and feline coronaviruses.1-4 Infection with TGEV or CCV causes inapparent infection and seroconversion (development of coronavirus antibodies) in cats under experimental conditions, however, natural infection with these viruses is probably rare.1,3 However, recently canine coronavirus has been found to produce a syndrome that is clinically identical to FIP under experimental conditions. Feline Seizures and Epilepsy The intent of this page is to provide information for people whose cats have had seizures. Seizures are a serious problem, and a cat that has had a seizure should be taken to a veterinarian for proper diagnosis. A proper diagnosis may be expensive and may take some time, but there is usually an underlying cause that can be eliminated or appropriate treatment that can be prescribed. The information in this page is not meant to substitute for a veterinarian's advice, but to aid those who are trying to learn more about their cat's illness and to encourage owners of cats that have had seizures to have their cat's illness diagnosed as quickly as possible. Grass Sickness in Horses

Grass Sickness in Horses Dr E. Milne, BVM&S, PhD, MRCVS. This page is intended only as a guide. It is not designed to replace your Veterinary Surgeon's expertise. INTRODUCTION Grass sickness is a disease of horses, ponies and donkeys in which there is damage to parts of the nervous system which control involuntary functions, producing the main symptom of gut paralysis. The cause is unknown but the nature of the damage to the nervous system suggests that a type of toxin is involved. The disease occurs almost exclusively in horses with access to grass. The disease was first recognised about 1907 following an outbreak in army remount horses near Dundee. The incidence increased markedly and at least in Scotland, hundreds of horses, mainly draught animals, died annually from grass sickness in t Read More

Information - Addison's Disease

") Addison's Disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) The adrenal glands are situated in the body at the cranial edge of the kidneys. Adrenocortical insufficiency or hypoadrenocorticism results from deficient production of glucocorticoids, mineralcorticoids, or both. Mineralcorticoids are responsible for the reabsorption of sodium and chloride. Decreased mineralcorticoid secretion results in loss of sodium, which causes an increase of potassium in the blood. High blood levels of potassium can lead to life threatening heart problems. Glucocorticoids have a multitude of functions and effects. They are involved in carbohydrate breakdown, they enhance glycogen storage and they surpress systemic immunity. Decreased glucocorticoid secretion can gause gastrointestinal signs such as loss of appetite, vomitin Read More

Kennel Cough - an introduction

Votes:0
KENNEL COUGH by Dr Rod Brooks Commonwealth Serum Laboratories published Top Dog Journal June 1992 Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease of dogs. Although rarely life threatening it causes coughing bouts which can persist for a number of weeks, despite treatment, creating significant discomfort for both the dog and its owner. Massive outbreaks can occur in kennels with the vast majority of dogs affected. It is far better to prevent kennel cough rather than try and control the signs of infection once they have occurred. Affected dogs frequently have been resident in boarding kennels or training complex, or have been in close contact with other dogs at shows, race tracks, obedience classes or similar assembly, within the previous 5 to 10 days. Jan/Feb 1999 B efore our present dogs and cats were domesticated, they had to forage for their food as predators or as scavengers. This means that whatever they devoured was in a raw state. As man, canines, and felines began to co-habitate, these animals became useful as , in the case of Egyptian culture, cats were used to keep the mouse population down in the grain stores. Canines, with their keen sense of hearing and smell were sentries to clans of antient humans. For the duties and tasks performed by these animals, they were rewarded for their efforts by humans sharing their foods. As time progressed, these animals became more domesticated and more dependent on humans for food and shelter. As humans progressed so did his companion animals, i.e., when fire was discovered and early humans Read More
