Andrea Doria | Grand Dame of the Sea

luxury & style at sea An attempt by the Italian?s to regain their former glory on the Atlantic was made with the launch of the fabulously sleek Andrea Doria in 1951. Following the loss of the Rex and Conte di Savoia during the course of the second World War, the once proud fleet of Italia had been diminished to a point of nonexistence. Rising from the ruins of that once proud line, Andrea Doria was a bold creation that embodied the Italian tradition of style and luxury at sea. The beautiful setting of the Ball Room ( First Class ) on the ANDREA DORIA provides a gay background for gala evenings. Named for the famed Italian admiral Andrea Doria, Italia?s newest liner was stunning and modern in everyway. Christened by Giuseppe Saragat, her launch on 16 June 1951 marked Italia's reentry into t Read More

Battle of Cape St. Vincent - February 14th 1797

HMS Victory, flagship of Admiral Sir John Jervis at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent February 14th 1997 marked the bicentenary of the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, the first of the important series of Horatio Nelson's naval victories leading up to the bicentennial of the Battle of Trafalgar in 2005. 1797 was an eventful year - two of the Royal Navy's greatest victories were achieved in this year - St. Vincent in February and Camperdown in October. Yet, between these two dates the navy passed through a serious crisis of fleet mutinies at Spithead and The Nore. 1797 also saw the rise to fame of Horatio Nelson, whose dramatic action at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent secured victory. Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Naval History Division • Washington USS Reuben James I (DD-245) Reuben James was born in Delaware, Ohio about 1776. He joined the U.S. Navy and served on various ships, including the frigate USS Constellation. A greenish patch of tropical water straight ahead marked the spot where more than two centuries earlier the hapless HMS Pandora --exactly the size of our own charter craft--slid to the bottom. Kronan

Kronan The 126 gun battleship Kronan was built in 1668 by Francis Sheldon and was one of the world's largest ships in its time. She was 53 m long and 14 m wide. During battle against a Danish-Dutch fleet in June 1676, Kronan listed heavily during a badly prepared turn, then suddenly exploded and quickly sank with 800 men. Only 42 survived. What caused the blast is a mystery, perhaps something broke loose during the list and ignited the gunpowder. Possibly Lorentz Creutz, the newly appointed commander and admiral, is to blame for incompetence, because he had no naval experience before commanding the ship. Discovery This was one of the lost wrecks that engineer/archaeologist Anders Franz?n found in Swedish archives and placed on a search list . Finally, Franz?n together with Bengt Grisell an Read More

--> Deep-Sea Machines by Jennifer Uscher Bathysphere The bathysphere -- bathys is Greek for "deep" -- was developed in the early 1930s by William Beebe and Otis Barton, two explorers from the New York Zoological Society. It was a 4,500-pound hollow steel ball about five feet in diameter, which was raised and lowered from a ship by a cable. Electrical connections powered its oxygen system and searchlight. Air came from oxygen tanks fitted to the interior, with trays of powdered chemicals to absorb moisture and carbon dioxide. The oxygen was kept circulating by hand-held woven palm-frond fans. In 1934, Beebe and Barton dropped 3,028 feet down into the ocean off the coast of Bermuda, relaying news of their finds by telephone cable to a ship on the surface. Detroit was the last and largest ship built at the Navy Yard at Amherstburg Ontario. King George III commissioned the "Detroit" to be built in honor of a brief capture of Fort Detroit (City of Detroit). She was to serve as the flagship of the British Fleet. The Detroit along with the entire fleet were captured by U.S. Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry aboard the U.S. Flagship Niagara on September 10, 1813 in The Battle of Lake Erie at Put In Bay. The Detroit was brought to Presque Isle, until the declaration of peace. She was then sunk for preservation and raised in 1837 to be refitted as a merchant vessel. In Read More

Royal Regals - a History of Ocean Liners

he golden era of ocean liners remains one of the most captivating eras in history. Indeed, few eras can rival the achievements of the engineers and craftsmen who designed such magnificent ocean liners as Conte di Savoia , Normandie , RMS Queen Mary , Nieuw Amsterdam , Andrea Doria , and SS United States . All evocative of opulence, splendour and unequivocal luxury, these great ocean liners represented the supreme pinnacle of maritime achievement. Their construction saw the development of an unspoken rivalry between nations that resulted in national governments financing the construction of these prolific and magnificent ocean liners. For the luxury, size and speed of a great ocean liner measured a nation?s prestige in the international community. The ocean liners presented here are some of Read More

Signal Flags

Votes:0
Signal Flag Systems Signal flags are used to visually identify ships and send messages through the use of a published book of codes. The code systems visible in many of the museum paintings however, predate the current International Code of Signals . The accuracy of marine painting often allows vessel identification to be made solely on the basis of the owner flags and signal system depicted on the vessel. Elford's Telegraphic Flags Until 1857 The Elford Telegraph system was used in Boston Harbor and along the Atlantic Seaboard. The flags are easy to read since blue and white are the only colors. In this painting of the Packet Liverpool , the Elford flags for 5141 fly on the mizzenmast ( Watson flags are also present - see below ). THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE

THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE The Hanseatic League was not so much a league of cities as it was a league of merchant associations within the cities of Northern Germany and the Baltic. Trade in the middle ages was a dangerous and risky business and the only way for merchants to protect themselves was by travelling together. This banding together of merchants on the road led to their alliances at home as well. In the case of the Hanseatic league the impetus for its formation was trade along the Kiel "salt road" which did not run between Kiel and Luebeck, but between Hamburg and Lubeck but was named after the town where the salt was mined. The Hansa was founded in the twelfth century by an alliance between the northern towns of Hamburg and Luebeck which lay on opposite sides of the base of the Danish Read More

T.S.S. Nea Hellas To several generations of Greeks, and other Europeans who were yearning for a new start in a new world, the Greek Line steamship, T.S.S Nea Hellas was the ship of dreams. She was not a glamorous beauty like the four stacker contemporaries of her day, but for the hundreds of thousands of immigrants who she carried to the America, with little more than their optimism for life in a new land, she was the bridge to the future. These immigrants spent 15 days traveling from Piraeus to New York with stops in Naples, Genoa, Malta, Lisbon, and Halifax. That's an eternity by today's standards, and their voyages left them all with indelible memories. Their American descendants also have memories of the stories they heard about the ship from their moms and dads, and their papous and y Read More

Traditional Navigation in the Western Pacific @ University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA MUSEUM of Archaeology and Anthropology presents Is there a primitive mentality essentially different from a civilized one? Or do people learn and mentally organize their experience in similar ways in spite of differences in their cultures and in the content of what they have to learn? We know that all people, if raised in the appropriate environment, prove capable of learning to speak any language and to think and operate effectively in the context of any culture. But what about different people's traditional bodies of specialized lore? Are they organized in similar ways, or not? Cognitive psychologists are interested in understanding how specialists mentally process and store their knowledge so that they can retrieve it as needed. Traditional navigators of the C Read More

SS United States SS America Pan Am Stratocruiser Larry Driscoll's MEMORIES OF A TRANSATLANTIC PASSENGER They were our national status symbols at sea, ships of state, showing the world that Americans could build and sail great ocean liners. When the SS America was launched in 1939 the event was described in the Baltimore Sun as the ?Launching of a new drive by the United States for maritime ascendancy?. It was long overdue. The last time an American ship had achieved recognition for luxury and speed was in 1851 when the Collins liner Baltic crossed the Atlantic in less than 10 days. Since then the British and European had built bigger and faster ships that dominated the North Atlantic passenger trade. That was to change when on July 3, 1952. With 2,000 passengers aboard; Captain Harry Manni Read More

U. S. S. HARVEST MOON . Civil War Flagship of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron 1864-1865. On March 1, 1865 the Union Steamer Harvest Moon , Flagship of Admiral John A. Dahlgren, struck a confederate torpedo and sank in Winyah Bay 5 miles SSE of the city of Georgetown, South Carolina. To this day, the Harvest Moon rests where she went down, buried under the sands of Winyah Bay with her smokestack still proudly visible. The Harvest Moon had taken Admiral Dahlgren to Georgetown to inspect Battery White, recently abandoned by the Rebels. Prior to her departure a torpedo was assembled by Confederate Captain Thomas Daggett and placed in the channel where the Harvest Moon struck it as she steamed away from Georgetown. The resulting explosion tore out the bottom of the ship and the Harvest M Read More

William Jennings Bryan: American Protest Over the Sinking of the Lusitania Please call on the minister of foreign affairs and, after reading to him this communication, leave him with a copy. In view of recent acts of the German authorities in violation of American rights on the high seas which culminated in the torpedoing and sinking of the British steamship Lusitania on May 7, 1915, by which over 100 American citizens lost their lives, it is clearly wise and desirable that the government of the United States and the Imperial German government should come to a clear and full understanding as to the grave situation which has resulted. The sinking of the British passenger steamer Falaba by a German submarine on March 28, through which Leon C. Thrasher, an American citizen, was drowned; the a Read More
