Votes:0 Railroad Research Resources -- Randy Hees, SPCRR This document is an attempt to provide a guide to available resources related to railroad history. This is by no means a compete listing, but is intended to be a starting point. Railroad Histories Railroads and their history have been a hobby for many. Railroad history books are numerous. Many are not the scholarly history you might hope for, instead they are written as entertainment. While the scholarship and research may be good, sources are frequently not cited (one exception is photos) with the exception of bibliographies (sometimes even these are missing). These books are good for both developing a background for further research and helping establish dates and other facts which allow you to find additional information. Votes:0 Railroad History Please Join our Mail List. Input a valid email address. --> Railroads influenced just about every aspect of American history and life from the mid-nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries. They became America's first really big business, and still play a vital role in the national economy. Beginning with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, trains brought settlers to California and shipped many of the products of the Golden State to markets throughout North America. The state's rapid development into the sixth largest economy in the world was made possible, to a great extent, by the railroad. It all began with four Sacramento storekeepers and a visionary, but persuasive, civil engineer. The following categories are folders containing brief history Read More Go to Site

The Illinois Tunnel Company ( later known as the Chicago Tunnel Company) started operating trains through the freight tunnels in 1906. The small four wheel electric locomotives hauled pony freight cars between stores, office buildings, post office facilities, warehouses, factories, and railroad stations. Votes:0 History of the Dunderberg Spiral Railway The model for the Dunderberg Spiral Railway (DSR) was the Mumford
brothers' Switch Back Railroad of Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania. The cars
there went up one inclined plane, coasted down a "back track", went up a
second inclined plane, and coasted a short way again to the terminal, nine
miles west of Mauch Chunk. The cars then coasted all the way back on the
"down track". Despite the name, the part of the railroad used for the
excursion service was relatively straight and was simply a "double-twisted
figure 8", meaning the down track passed under the other line twice. One
of the advertised features was reaching 50 miles per hour near the end of
the down track. But as successful as it was, the Switch Back was up in the Lehigh

If you do, you've come to the right place. Here you'll find pictures and information about the Alco PA and FA, Baldwin Sharknoses and Babyfaces, FM Erie units and C-liners, and EMD E and F units. In my opinion, the cab unit diesels built shortly before and after World War II were the most beautiful diesels ever built. They were sleek and colorful, in stark contrast to the often dull looking steam locomotives that dominated the rails. Don't get me wrong, I like steamers too, but the colorful diesel brought a new, vibrant look, to the railroads. Votes:0 In the isolated desert region of southeast Arizona, and along the Mexican border area of southern New Mexico, not much has changed in the past century. This part of the country is still primarily ranch country, just as it has been since white man first occupied the area. One major development that occurred in this area during 1902 was the construction of the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad. Originally built by Phelps Dodge Corp. to ship copper anodes from its Copper Queen mine near Bisbee, Arizona, to its smelters located in El Paso, Texas. This railroad was later extended to Tucson, Arizona, and went to become a transportation lifeline for the region, providing ranchers and local communities with a connection to the outside world. Votes:0 GULF MOBILE & OHIO MEMORIES WELCOME! Here is yet another site for GM&O enthusiasts and one that I hope you will enjoy. The GM&O's Alton Route was one of my favorite lines and one that I rode very often in the 1960's and on into the AMTRAK era. I am particularly fond of the GM&O's former passenger operations, which always had a tremendous amount of enduring character. I have now added material that encompasses the southern Rebel Route freight and passenger operations. Diesel fans will find that the Diesel Album has been expanded as well. Most of this material has never been on the web or previously published. I am aware that many of these pages are slow loading, particularly if you have a older machine or slower modem. To address this problem, I have added thumbnail galleries which should g Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Growing up around the Northern Pacific Railroad in the ?1950's and 60's When I was eight years old, steam was finished on the NP. Still, I have a few memories of the engines, thanks to my father, F. B. Thompson, who took me to work with him many times, took hundreds of photos, and stopped to train watch on many Sunday drives. They weren't really Sunday drives, on the extra board, you went on drives when you could! Over the years, I rode with him as often as possible, and became a decent photographer myself, although most of my photos are in the NP to BN transition era. ? Over the years, several other railroaders have left me their collections of negatives and prints, and so now I have a large collection I'd like to share, along with some memories. Votes:0 Welcome to the Hoboken Shore Railroad Home Page! So... What's the Hoboken Shore? Glad you asked! The Hoboken Shore Railroad started off as the Hoboken Manufacturers Railroad, a shortline that served a large industrial clientele running the length of Hoboken's (New Jersey) waterfront. The line had tight curves, street trackage, a float bridge - all elements that endeared the railroad to its fans. Here's a map to get you acquainted with the railroad. The railroad was renamed the "Hoboken Shore Railroad" in 1954, solely for the reason that "it sounded better!" Traffic started dropping off as industry on the Hoboken waterfront began closing down and moving out. The railroad operated in a limited fashion until at least 1977, and filed for abandonment in 1978. Today, very little of the railroad Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 When Mark Twain viewed Albert Bierstadt's painting The Domes of the Yosemite in 1867, he declared it "altogether too gorgeous," adding that "as a picture, this work must please, but as a portrait, I do not think it will answer. Portraits should be accurate." Despite Twain's suspicion of
the lack of verisimilitude in the painting, the
New York audience was eager for images of the territory west of the Mississippi. Paintings and sketches of places like Yosemite and Yellowstone suggested that America possessed scenery more majestic than Europe's and that despite the chaos of the Civil War and its aftermath, America was still destined for greatness. The eastern segment of the track reached the Missouri River at Bismarck, North Dakota, in June, 1873. Votes:0 The Birth of California's Narrow Gauge Railroads "Promoting the Discussion of the History, Development, and Preservation of Narrow Gauge Railroads in California" The name of this page comes from the proposed title of a new book by Bruce MacGregor. The book will cover the beginnings of California's narrow gauge movement, tracing the first six lines built - the Monterey and Salinas Valley, the Santa Cruz Railroad, the Santa Cruz and Felton, the Santa Clara Valley, the North Pacific Coast, and the Nevada County Narrow Gauge. A common thread found tying together all these efforts is the presence of Thomas and Martin Carter and their company, the Carter Brothers. Publication is expected in the next two years. California's narrow gauge era started in 1874 with the opening of the Monterey and Sal Read More Go to Site
Votes:0 Train Schedules - Bus Schedules - Depot Hours & Address ...... .. Depot Hours Monday - Friday: 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday: 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday: Closed .. . On Saturday morning May 29, 1909, the first steam-powered passenger train into Centerville received a hearty welcome. A cannon was fired, the locomotive was decorated with flags, and the train crew was presented with Centerville's choicest fruits and flowers. But for more than a year after this celebration, local Centerville citizens complained about the boxcar that served as the town depot. Before any improvement could be made, property had to be purchased and Niles Road (later renamed Peralta Boulevard) had to be relocated to make room for a full-sized depot. Finally, more than a year after train service began to the town of Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 The Dustball Express Building an N-scale model railroad under your bed Most people who build model railroads are lucky enough to live in places that have lots and lots of space. A few of us are crazy enough to live in Manhattan shoebox apartments and have to improvise if we want to build anything more than the simplest circle of track. I started with that circle of track, but it got dull after a while so the rails grew and grew and the space under my bed got more and more crowded. Thankfully, it eventually got less dusty too. I have to confess that I'm really quite new to model railroading. I'm not spending my days in railyards looking for authentic buildings to model in balsa, nor do I worry too much about prototypes. The trains I'm most familiar with are Amtrak's Northeast Corridor route Read More Go to Site

He smiled happily. This was going to be an experience he'd want to remember forever. He leaned over and groped around under the seat until he located the flap of his green backpack. From inside, he extracted a pen and the brand new black and white composition notebook his mother had bought him before leaving for their trip. He opened the book and on the inside cover he carefully inscribed; Johnny Washington, Age 10. His hand automatically smoothed the crisp white paper on the opposite page. Wit Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 The Unofficial Web Site of the Algoma Eastern Railway Welcome to the unofficial web site of the Algoma Eastern Railway. The AER began life as the Manitoulin & North Shore Railway. It was absorbed by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1931 and is now part ghost railway, part unused rusting rail line and part active railway. The story of the AER is the story of the early development of nickel mining & smelting in the Sudbury district and the opening up of Manitoulin Island. Hopefully, it will also be the story of a modern resurrection of this historical line as a Northern Ontario tourist attraction. Votes:0 Trackdog's Railroad Page The above image is (c)1996, Trains Magazine, Kalmbach Publishing Co., reprinted with permission. Welcome to my railroad page. Now, even though most of the pictures on this page were taken by me, I don't go around chasing trains to take pictures and listen to the hot box detectors and such. I don't have anything against the people who do, but that's just not my thing. Anyway, if you haven't guessed yet, as a lad of nineteen, I was hired by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company. I went to work as a trackman in Michigan which was most of the Northern Region, or the old Pere Marquette District. The C&O Railway at that time was part of the Chessie System. Now, of course, all that has become part of CSX Transportation. How do you like the way I seamlessly slipped that Read More Go to Site

The final issue of Mileposts (March 1983 issue) carried a reprint of Gil Kneiss' article, "Fifty Candles for Western Pacific" as well as R.W.
