Votes:0 Paws Come With Claws - That's One Of Natures Laws by Friends of Animals So, if you love your cat: DON'T DECLAW! Many cat owners, have no idea what declawing means to their animals. Declawing means far more than leaving your pet defenseless against an
attack outdoors. It means: The severing of ligaments and tendons that bring pain. The creating of an imbalance that can lead to injury. A change in personality and temperament. A cat may go berserk, bite and growl. It means you, as a cat owner, have renounced the responsibility you
assumed when you fell in love with that kitten or cat. How important are a cat's claws? Dr. Louis J. Camuti, a practicing veterinarian for 58 years, puts it this
way: "I wouldn't declaw a cat if you paid me $1,000 per nail!" Have you often wondered at a cat's remark Read More Go to Site

Cats! Thousands of years ago cats were worshipped as gods, cats have never forgotten this. The Egyptians worshipped the cat as a god, and had tame cats 4,000 years ago. When a house cat died, the family and servants shaved their eyebrows and went into mourning. The death of a temple cat was mourned by the whole city. Many mummies of cats have been found, prepared in the same manner as the mummies of kings and nobles. The penalty for killing a cat was death. The tame cat was rare in Europe until after A.D. 1000. In European superstition the cat was usually an evil spirit rather than a god. The devil was often pictured as a black cat and the familiar spirits of witches were supposed to take the shape of cats. Votes:0 Claw Trimming If possible start training your cat to have her claws trimmed as a kitten. Gently stroke your cat's paws often, getting her used to having her paws held before you attempt trimming. Be sure to reward your cat with a special food treat-one that she receives only during claw trimming or some other grooming procedure-during or immediately after trimming. The best time to trim your cat's claws is when she is relaxed or sleepy. Never try to give a pedicure right after a stressful experience or an energetic round of play. Your cat should be resting comfortably on your lap, the floor, or a table. Hold a paw in one hand and press a toe pad gently to extend the claw. Notice the pink tissue (the quick) on the inside of the claw. Avoid the quick when you trim the claw; cutting into it w Read More Go to Site

There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds. The American cat population reached nearly 68 million in 1996. American Demographics magazine estimates that's about 200 million kitty yawns per hour and a whopping 425 million catnaps each day! A cat's heart beats twice as fast as a human heart, at 110 to 140 beats per minute. 25% of cat owners blow dry their cats hair after a bath. The largest cat breed is the Ragdoll. Males weigh twelve to twenty pounds, with females weighing ten to fifteen pounds. The smallest cat breed is the Singapura. Males weigh about six pounds w Read More Go to Site

She is probably nearby searching for food. Start leaving food and fresh water out for her so she will not have to look for food and will have enough nourishment to feed her kittens. Generally, when the kittens are hungry, they will cry and the mother will return to feed them. There is a right way and a wrong way to enter the cat breeding world. Even people who do things the right way will have unexpected happenings and unforeseen expenses; every breeder in this hobby has had moments of darkness, of self-doubt, times when we felt so overwhelmed we were ready to "throw in the towel" and call it quits. These tend to happen early in the process rather than later. The more prepared you can be, the more advance homework you can do, the better time you will have when those difficulties arise. In ancient Egypt, mummies were made of cats, and embalmed mice were placed with them in their tombs. In one ancient city, over 300,000 cat mummies were found. Votes:0 The Cat Ladder Here's the cat ladder that I made for Brian's cats. The picture to the
right is at his house. That's Gabe on the top and Syja on the bottom. It's made from a four foot tall step ladder and used 500 feet of 1/4"
sisal rope. The carpeted pieces are parts of a 12" diameter cardboard
concrete mold that I bought at a building supply store. The round carpeted
parts were the hardest by far and if I do this again, I'll just do rope.
We put two by fours across the bottom to anchor it more securely. It was a hit as a gift, even if it was almost a month late, though I'm
sure the Utah catnip I rubbed into the carpet helped. Here's the ladder being quality inspected at our house. That's Xena on
the top, Gabby's on the first rung, Lissy's on the floor behind her and

Needless euthanasia of healthy, adoptable cats is offensive to all cat lovers. The tail wagging of a cat in conflict is perhaps the most familiar, but there are other tail signals that humans might learn for a clue about kitty's mood at the moment: Tail is curved gently downward and then curves up again at the tip. The cat is relaxed and at peace with the world. Tail is raised slightly and softly curved. The cat is beginning to get interested in something. Tail is held erect, but tip is tilted over. The cat is very interested and is in a friendly mood, but has slight reservations. Tail is fully erect, and tip is stiffly vertical. The cat is offering an intense greeting without reservations. Heartworm Disease Cats get heartworms too! Dirofilaria immitis infection in cats is a very real
clinical problem with a increasing incidence and awareness. Heartworm disease
in cats was originally reported in Brazil in 1921; and has been reported
worldwide. Cats with heartworm disease are consistently diagnosed in heartworm
endemic areas where dogs have the disease. The increased awareness of the disease has made antemortem diagnosis
more common. The frequency of heartworm infection in the cat is generally
accepted to correlate with the dog population of the area, but at a lower
incidence. The clinical signs and diagnostic approach are different in
the cat as compared to the dog; which has impaired the veterinarian's ability
to detect this parasite in the cat. New techniques and met Read More Go to Site

is to provide information for people whose cats have had seizures.
Seizures are a serious problem, and a cat that has had a seizure
should be taken to a veterinarian for proper diagnosis. A proper
diagnosis may be expensive and may take some time, but there is
usually an underlying cause that can be eliminated or appropriate
treatment that can be prescribed. The information in this
page is not meant to substitute for a veterinarian's advice, but
to aid those who are trying to learn more about their cat's illness
and to encourage owners of cats that have had seizures to have
their cat's illness diagnosed as quickly as possible. More clinical

We once had a cat that got stuck in an 8" ventilation pipe for 2 days right next to the house! We searched frantically, night and day, for him all during this time. Votes:0 If You Love Your Cat, Don't Declaw! by Jackie Bell Many years ago when I had my beloved Siamese, I used to get
annoyed when she would scratch me in play on my legs. I was
ignorant about young kitten behavior and instead of making an
effort to amuse her and train her to use a scratching post, I took
the lazy way out and simply had her declawed. I always wondered if
perhaps her life could have been more satisfying if she had been
allowed to express her natural self. CATS NEED THEIR CLAWS...... Physically , A cat's body is very well designed. The skeleton is more
elastic and better jointed than that of a dog. In the shoulder
there is so much play that the shoulder blade may touch the jaw or

WHAT IS HYPERTHYROIDISM? Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid gland produces an excessive amount of thyroid hormone. Diagnosis is made on the basis of clinical signs and history, palpation and blood tests. The thyroid gland regulates many organ systems in the body, so when it begins to produce too much hormone, multiple clinical signs can develop. Some of these signs include: Behaviour changes, weight loss despite a ravenous appetite, rapid heart rate or irregular rhythm, increased thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhea and poor hair coat. If the hyperthyroidism is not treated, the cardiac disease that develops can Read More Go to Site
Votes:0 CAT The cats--domestic and wild--have intrigued humans for thousands of years, and throughout that time the relationship of these animals with humans has varied widely. People have valued cats as hunters, worshiped them as gods, and sacrificed them as demons. However, the animals have survived and are still fascinating. They have often been used as symbols of beauty, grace, mystery, and power, and they have been favorite subjects for many artists and writers. Today, the domestic cat (house cat) is second only to the dog in popularity as a house pet. No one knows exactly how many domestic cats there are in the United States, but researchers estimate that more than 30 million are owned as pets. There is no way to estimate the numbers of homeless cats that roam about freely as feral animals ( Read More Go to Site
Votes:0 HOME Back to Client Info Index Aggression Between Cats in a Multi-Cat Household When a cat is frightened or startled, its reaction may be redirected to the nearest available individual or object. In a multi-cat household, this target may be another cat. Redirected aggression is swift and intense, and may begin a cycle of persistent aggressive interaction. The spontaneous eruption can occur between housemates that previously coexisted peacefully. It may subside within moments but, more commonly, several days or even weeks may pass before the housemates resume normal relations. Sometimes the relationship between cats is permanently changed. In a multi-cat household, the target cat is not necessarily the first victim of the aggressive outburst, though usually it is. Occasionally, the roles ma Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 Cats and Wildlife A Conservation Dilemma By John S. Coleman, Stanley A. Temple and Scott R. Craven Introduction Domestic cats first arrived in North America with European colonists several hundred years ago. Since that time, cats have multiplied and thrived as cherished pets, unwanted strays, and semi-wild predators. Although often overlooked as a problem, free-ranging cats affect other animals, often far from the homes and farms they share with people. Because we brought the domestic cat to North America, we have a responsibility to both the cats and to the wild animals they may affect. Here are some interesting and perhaps surprising facts concerning the contemporary dilemma posed by free-ranging domestic cats in the United States. The front legs are connected to the rest of the body by only one muscle. The cat lacks the clavicle (collarbone), so it can easy squeeze through small spaces. Votes:0 --> Playful, brave, loving, and incorrigible! NATURE ponders those EXTRAORDINARY CATS. Cats command our attention and our devotion. These fascinating creatures have been perplexing people for thousands of years. Are they wild or tame? Aloof or emotional? Funny or indignant? Angelic or mischievous? Needy or independent? The answer is all of the above. And that's why we adore them. In fact, they outnumber dogs as pets 66 million to 55 in the U.S. After all, they're more independent, and, perhaps even more significantly, cats provide us with a close connection to something wild. Indeed, no matter how well a cat is fed, stroked, brushed, and otherwise fussed over, they are hunters at heart. (or have they?) If cats are not cared for, they can quickly revert to a "wild" state of self sufficiency, so are they really domesticated? We need to understand instinctive behavior to understand why they do what they do. For instance, scratching upright surfaces is instinctive behavior even shown in declawed cats. Votes:0 PLAY AGGRESSION IN FELINES MAKING A NASTY CAT NICE September 23, 1997 Submitted by: Klea Talbot WHAT IS FELINE PLAY
AGGRESSION? Feline play aggression can be a very
annoying and unsettling problem for any cat owner. Play aggression can be
loosely defined as aggressive interactions, between the problem cat and
another cat or between the cat and one or more people. The cat shows the
aggression by giving signs (body postures) of fighting, exploring,
predatory behavior or investigating toward the victim involved (more
commonly directed to a person than another cat therefore this paper will
merely discuss this aggression in terms of a human victim). Play
aggression is most common in cats two years old or younger, although it
has been noted in some older cats. The aggression is usually initiated Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 How to Make Your Outdoor Cat a Happy Indoor Cat From CATS INDOORS! THE CAMPAIGN FOR SAFER BIRDS AND CATS Used with the permission of the American Bird Conservancy Although it takes patience, an outdoor cat can be turned into a perfectly content indoor pet. The key is to make the conversion gradually and provide lots of attention and stimulation while the cat is indoors. Cats are creatures of habit, so you must be careful to slowly replace your cat's old routine of going outside with the new exciting routine of staying in. If your cat is outdoors most of the time, bring your cat inside for increasingly longer stays. Gradually shorten the length of time the cat is outside until you no longer let him or her out at all. Substitute outside excursions with periods of special play time. Supervise Read More Go to Site

Votes:0 ORPHANED KITTENS Options when you find an Orphaned Kitten: 1. Nursing mom: Kittens under 5-6 weeks should not be put on a nursing mom unless both moms have been tested for FeLV & FIV. Kittens can pass diseases to the nursing mom and the nursing mom can pass diseases to the kittens. 2. Original mom is best: A mom cat will still produce milk to feed her kittens after being spayed. Mom's milk is the best for the kittens. They get immunities from mom's milk. 3. Bottle feeding: When bottle-feeding kittens, use a different bottle for each litter if you have more than one litter. Also, change your clothes to prevent upper respiratory infections (URIs) and other diseases from passing from litter to litter. 4. Votes:0 Interested in the Exotic? Try Spotted! With a pattern that resembles a combination of tiger and leopard and a body form like the cheetah, these graceful domestic cats bring a bit of the wild indoors. As the only naturally spotted breed of domestic cat, Maus are characterized by their distinctive pattern. Their markings are a combination of barring on the legs and tail which ends with a dark tip. The shoulder bars break into spots in a random placement on long bodies. The Mau has a unique "belly flap," a loose fold of skin that extends from the flank to the back knee. This allows the Mau greater extension and increases its quickness and grace. Today's Mau bears an uncanny resemblance to cats that are pictured in ancient Egyptian art. Votes:0 Information Sheet Cats - a vegetarian diet? Although it is possible to keep dogs on a vegetarian diet satisfactorily, cats are more specialised and you are advised to consider carefully before changing your cat to a vegetarian diet. Cats are natural carnivores and are unlikely to willingly forego meat from their diet. Cats fed on vegetarian diets are likely to look elsewhere for their preferred meat diet, and many cats will hunt and kill small rodents and birds. Cats require certain nutrients from meat that cannot be obtained in sufficient amounts from plant foods. These include taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, and vitamin B12. Achieving both objectives at the same time seems simple enough. Unfortunately, few medical procedures are totally without risk, and sometimes procedures that are normally helpful can cause harm. The association between vaccine administration and sarcomas (specific kinds of cancer) is an example. Is this something new? Sarcomas are not new forms of cancer in cats.
