The UnMuseum - Of Mastodons, Mammoths

Of Mastodons, Mammoths and Other Giants of the Pleistocene Bones of a Mastodon. During the Pleistocene Epoch, from about 1.5 million to 10,000 years ago, the world grew cold. Great sheets of ice, sometimes a thousand feet thick, moved down from the north gouging out the land. These harsh conditions seemed to encourage the development of giant mammals (Probably because larger animals are better at competing for scare resources like food). Among them were the Mastodon, and the Mammoth . Mastodons and Mammoths were closely related to today's elephants. The Mastodon was slightly shorter than an elephant, but more heavily built with upward curving tusks. Mammoths ranged in size from a dwarfed form (6 foot high) up to the Imperial mammoth that stood 14 feet high at the shoulder. Mammoth tusks cu Read More

Paul led trips for such diverse groups as the ESU geology club, the Boy Scouts, Elderhostel, the Kansas Academy of Sciences, and the Kansas Earth Science Teachers Association. Larson in the Illinois State By 16,000 years ago the height of the last major glaciation The landscape of the Midwest was very different 16,000 years ago. Although glaciers were retreating, much of the midwestern U.S. was still under ice. Some areas had been only recently deglaciated. These areas may have been covered with bare sheets of till that were slowly being revegetated. Large, proglacial lakes formed where morraines dammed the water coming off the melting glaciers . Dust storms were depositing thick layers of loess (windblown dust) over many areas. Lakes, marshes, and mires were common. Sixteen thousand years ago the climate was quite di Read More
