An Evolutionary Breakthrough: The Discovery of a "Fingered" Fish

Votes:0
An Evolutionary Breakthrough: The Discovery of a "Fingered" Fish By Gabrielle Two fossil-hunting paleontologists named Ted Daeschler and Neil Shubin from North central Pennsylvania discovered a fossil of a fish with fingers in its fins. They found this rock near the Susquehanna River by the side of a road in 1995. This finding could cause the rewriting of textbooks all around the world. Throughout history, people have concluded that fingers did not evolve until the creatures made the transition to land 360 million years ago. The chance that fingers evolved in the water could re-categorize the invertebrate evolutionary theories. Daeschler, from the Academy of Sciences, and Shubin, from the University of Pennsylvania, found a wrist-like joint and eight long bones that would have been inside Read More

Chinook salmon

The Chinook Salmon The Chinook Salmon is an example of an endangered animal in Canada. Endangered means that if we don't act now we won't have any in the future, so, let's act now! What Is The Chinook Salmon? The Chinook Salmon (or the King Salmon) is found along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. They are found on the coast of British Columbia and various states of the U.S. Salmon (in general) are anadromus, this means that they spend most of their adult life at sea but go to fresh water to release eggs or sperm to multiply. When they mature, they go to their "home lake" to spawn, and that is the cycle. Why Are They Endangered? The main killer of the Chinook isn't fishermen like you might be thinking (it is part of the problem, but not the main reason), it's water management projec Read More

Fishes - Introduction

Votes:0
Unit: Fishes 1 Introduction FISHES The vertebrates can be divided into two groups; the Agnatha (which means without jaws) and the Gnathostomata* which includes all higher vertebrates. Agnathans are separated from all the other vertebrates by their lack of one very important characteristic, a jaw. However, they have most other vertebrate characteristics. Agnathans include the extinct OSTRACODERMS , and the living HAGFISHES and LAMPREYS - fishes adapted for life as scavengers or parasites. The jawed fishes are normally divided into three groups: Placodermi - scaly-skinned fishes Chondrichthyes - cartilaginous fishes Osteichthyes - bony fishes. World fisheries are of vital economic importance to many countries such as Britain, Canada, Russia, Japan and Peru and these industries are almost all Read More

Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary , designated in January 1981, is one of the largest near shore live-bottom reefs in the southeastern United States. The sanctuary is located 17.5 nautical miles off Sapelo Island, GA, and one of 14 marine protected areas that make up the National Marine Sanctuary System that encompass more than 150,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington State to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huroon to American Samoa; and one of three marine sanctuaries that make up the Southeast Region. Within the 17-square-nautical-mile sanctuary, there are both rocky ledges and sandy flat places. The reefs' rock ledges, submerged beneath 60 to 70 feet of water, can be as tall as 6-8 feet and are highly complex-they have nooks and crannies and bumps and pl Read More

Purpose and Concepts Life Cycle of the Pacific Salmon Students are sensitive to environmental issues, such as energy conservation and recycling. They can learn to appreciate that life in the wild offers us models of recycling, too. The unique story of the migratory life of Pacific salmon offers an illustrative example for students to begin to understand the concepts of: Life cycle Recycling Distance Innate behavior Dependency The purpose of this activity is to present the Pacific salmon story clearly in sequence, constructing circular life-cycle models that can be hung from the classroom ceiling. The optional work with maps is intended to orient students to the geographical relationships among the places in which Pacific salmon live at different life stages. When Fish Bite

Votes:0
Dr. Peter Wainwright with triggerfish skeleton W hen Fish Bite Fish have been chomping things for 400 million years. How they do it today is a fascinating study in the vagaries of evolution. by Frank Stephenson They've been catching and eating things longer than the swiftest, most terrifying predator that ever roamed the earth. Two hundred million years before the first dinosaur clamored about in search of a meal, the seas teemed with them, and their appetites were every bit as ravenous and as varied as their saurian cousins' would ever be. Fish are such commonplace animals-wherever there's water you'll likely find them-that it's easy to understand why they're often taken for granted even by serious students of wildlife. But to scientists with a passion to learn how Earth's incredible web Read More
