2007 California Prune Crop Estimate Sacramento, CA, June 1, 2007 - The California Agricultural Statistics Service announced a 2007 dried plum crop estimate of 95,000 tons. This estimate would represent a 49% drop from the 2006 California crop reported by handlers to total 187,737 tons and would be 29% below the previous five year average of 134,535 tons. This will be the 3rd year in the last four years that unseasonably hot weather during the March bloom period will have resulted in a significantly below average crop. While the July 31, 2007 year-end inventory carryover is expected to be significantly larger than last year’s 22,140 tons, much of the carryover is likely to be in the smaller sizes. This combined with another small crop in 2007 will result in an inadequate supply of the Read More

(Text Only Version) I n Florida, most oranges bloom in March-April. The "early" varieties, such as Hamlins and Parson Browns , reach maturity in October through January. The "mid-season" varieties such as the Pineapple Orange reach maturity in December-February. "Late season" varieties such as the Valencia matures from March-June. A ll citrus , including oranges, must ripen on the tree. Citrus does not ripen once removed from the tree. Orchard Nutrition Good orchard fertilizer practices and proper tree nutrition are extremely important for satisfactory yields and quality apples. Soil and foliar analysis plus orchard observation should be used to determine the nutritional status of the tree. One of the most effective nutrient management practices in an apple orchard is the maintenance of the soil pH in the range of 6.0 for the subsoil to 6.5 for the topsoil because the pH influences the availability of the various elements to the plant. Figure 1 shows the availability of some essential nutrient elements as influenced by the soil pH. For example, as the soil pH becomes acidic (pH <5.5), the phosphorous in the soil becomes unavailable to the plant. It does not matter if there is an adequate amount of phosphorous in the s Read More
