Colorado Called the "Centennial State," because it became the 38th state when the U.S. turned 100 in 1876, Colorado is most closely associated with the Rocky Mountains and has numerous peaks over 14,000 feet. The state's name comes from a Spanish word meaning "red" or "ruddy," the color of much of the state's terrain. Today, Colorado is known for its vast cattle ranges, agricultural acreage, and snow-covered mountains that are ideal for winter sports. Its capital is Denver and state flower is the Rocky Mountain columbine. Geography - Merriam-Webster's Atlas

--> Colorado Like many of the Western states, Colorado has an easily recognizable design for its flag. The red C stands not only for the name of the state but also for the state flower (columbine) and the state nickname ("Centennial State"). The latter was chosen because Colorado became a state in 1876, when the country was celebrating the centennial of its independence. The red, white, and blue of the U.S. flag appear in the Colorado flag, as do the blue, yellow, and white of the columbine. The red C recalls the Spanish word colorado ("red"), the origin of the state name. The area's extensive deposits of gold and silver--which brought many early settlers to the territory and which still are actively mined--are reflected in the yellow and white of the flag. The original flag design, by And Read More

St. Vrain's Fort

Votes:0
Welcome to St. Vrain's Fort Built by Ceran St. Vrain and the Bent brothers in 1837 near present day Platteville, Colorado, St. Vrain's Fort was a major trading post on the Platte River until 1848. The fort was built in the likeness of Bent's Old Fort in southeastern Colorado and remained a destination and landmark for many years. Eventually, it became the site of the first post office and first courthouse for what would become Weld County, Colorado. Unfortunately, the fort was allowed to fall into ruins and by 1951 so little was left, the site was leveled for farming. The monument shown here and a one-acre plot are all that remain today. The History of Pearl Lake State Park

Pearl Lake State Park in Routt County, CO is named for my grandmother, Minnie Pearl Hartt. As you might guess, my family helped to settle this region. This web site is a growing collection of historical information about the State Park. A colorful and dramatic history that dates back to the sheep industry in the late 1800's. I invite you to visit the following page , which gives a short summary of this history. Also - please check out the 5-generation album of historic photos from Hahn's Peak, Colorado and Rawlins, Wyoming - including bio pages on both John Kelly Hartt and Minnie Pearl Hartt . There is also a history of the Hartt family . As a kid, I would spend my summers at grandma's cabin, which is now on the shore of the lake. I remember those times as the best of my childhood.
