Edward Lear Home Page

There was an Old Derry down Derry... Edward Lear's Nonsense Poetry and Art Table of contents News : Octavo , who had already published Bell's Testudinata , now also offers a CD-ROM facsimile of Lear's Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots . Subscribe to the Edward Lear mailing list! Powered by groups.yahoo.com Why an Edward Lear page? Well, first of all because I like his nonsense very much, and then I wrote my thesis about him several years ago (don't worry, I'm not going to publish it!) so I am supposed to be widely read on the subject... Most important of all, however, is the fact that I haven't been able to find a great deal of Lear's nonsense poetry on the net and I think he deserves his small virtual space as much as his contemporary poetical colleague Lewis Carroll. How to tell the Birds from the Flowers

This is a book which belonged to my great-grandmother that I have enjoyed since childhood. I noticed the copyright had expired in the US, so I scanned it in so everyone can read it. The two-color gifs are small (under 10k) and should load very quickly even on a slow connection. I have transcribed the text as well, but it doesn't stand very well on its own; the special thing about the book is Woods' terrific rendering of the birds and plants. Feel free to download the gifs to your own computer should you so desire. (To do this in Netscape on a Mac, move the mouse pointer over the image and hold the button down for a second or two - you will get a menu with the option to save the image to your disk. On a Windows machine, you can accomplish the same task by clicking with the right mouse butto Read More
